A gastroenterologist has shared seven foods that support liver health, highlighting the importance of compounds like pectin and polyphenols. These nutrients are key for gut health, metabolism, and fighting inflammation.
Apples are a key source, recommended with cinnamon. The expert notes that “Apples give pectin (soluble fiber) and polyphenols.” The pectin is a valuable soluble fiber, while the polyphenols, combined with compounds in cinnamon, support insulin sensitivity and lipid levels.
Other polyphenol-rich foods on the list include cranberries, pomegranates, and berries. Cranberries’ polyphenols act as prebiotics for the gut-liver axis. Pomegranates’ unique polyphenols (ellagitannins) are suggested to calm inflammatory signals.
Raspberries and strawberries are rich in anthocyanins (a type of polyphenol) that offer metabolic and cardiometabolic benefits. Strawberries are best paired with 70% dark chocolate, which is itself rich in flavanols (another polyphenol).
The list is completed by two other powerhouses: watermelon with lime (for citrulline and vitamin C, supporting blood flow) and beetroot (for nitrates and fat-moving betaine). This provides a comprehensive, nutrient-dense approach.
