Joint-administrator Kris Wigfield has confirmed he has taken over the running of Sheffield Wednesday “with immediate effect” and will sell the club and stadium “as a whole.” The move comes after owner Dejphon Chansiri placed the club into administration.
The decision by Chansiri to include the stadium company was called “great news for supporters” by Wigfield. However, the move also triggered a 12-point EFL penalty, leaving the Owls on -6 points, 15 points from safety.
Wigfield stated the club “has been trading at a significant loss for several years,” with Chansiri funding the losses. “Increased financial pressure,” including a $pounds{}$1 million tax bill and unpaid wages, forced the owner’s hand.
Manager Henrik Pedersen met with the administrators and his “emotional” staff. He called the day a “fresh restart” and, despite the points gap, vowed to “keep fighting” for survival.
The Supporters Trust, which had led boycotts, is now urging fans to “re-engage.” “The club’s most urgent need is stability and income,” their statement read.
