A solid 60-run opening stand from Australia’s top order was completely squandered as the middle order collapsed in a heap, leading to a 98-run defeat to South Africa. The promising start made the subsequent capitulation even more shocking.

Travis Head (27) and his partner had laid the ideal platform for the chase of 297. They saw off the new ball and kept the run rate in check, putting their team in a commanding position to control the rest of the innings.

However, once the first wicket fell, the good work was undone in spectacular fashion. The middle-order batters failed to build on the foundation, with six wickets falling for just 29 runs. The inability to consolidate a strong start was the primary cause of the defeat.

The innings served as a lesson in the importance of partnerships throughout a 50-over match. While the opening stand was excellent, the lack of any subsequent partnership of substance meant the chase was doomed to fail.
