Google’s “Project Suncatcher” relies on a “holy trinity” of advanced technologies to work: hyper-efficient solar power, custom AI processors, and high-speed laser links. This tech trio forms the foundation of the company’s “moonshot.”

First is the power source: “solar panels that can be up to eight times more productive” in space. This “unlimited” energy is the “fuel” that makes the entire project economically and environmentally viable.

Second is the “brain”: “Google TPUs.” These are Google’s own AI-optimized chips. By launching its own hardware, Google is creating a powerful, purpose-built computing platform in orbit, designed specifically for its AI models.

Third is the “nervous system”: “free-space optical links.” These lasers will “connect” the satellites into a “compact constellation” and “beam their results back” to Earth, providing the “high-bandwidth” communication essential for any datacentre.

Google’s 2027 prototype launch is a test of this entire stack. The company must prove that all three technologies can work together, flawlessly, in the harsh environment of space. Failure in any one of these three “significant engineering challenges” would doom the entire project.
