The United States Mint has commenced the production of a new commemorative $1 coin that features President Donald Trump, as announced by the US Treasury Department. This initiative is part of the celebratory events for the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States. The new coin is expected to be released this fall.
The design of the coin received its final approval earlier in the year, although the version now being produced includes some modifications from the original proposal. Notably, instead of being made of solid gold, the coin will have a gold-colored finish. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent explained that the coin is meant to honor America’s enduring values of liberty and patriotism, reflecting the nation’s dedication to freedom.
On the obverse side of the coin, there is a portrait of Trump with the word “LIBERTY,” the years “1776–2026,” and the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST” inscribed. The reverse side showcases the iconic bald eagle from the Great Seal of the United States, accompanied by the national motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
The introduction of this coin has sparked controversy due to existing federal law that generally prohibits the depiction of living presidents on US currency. Despite this, Treasury officials assert that the Secretary has the discretion to authorize commemorative coin issues under specific circumstances.
