This initiative, detailed by the State Department, aims to enhance and unify the procedures used in the screening and vetting process for visa applicants.
According to officials, part of this updated process involves evaluating whether applicants might become a “public charge,” meaning they could potentially rely on public assistance benefits. This assessment forms a critical component of the initiative, which began its rollout at U.S. embassies and consulates at the start of August. Consequently, visa service appointments are being restructured, with embassies and consulates set to communicate directly with those applicants whose appointments are affected.
This development is one of several immigration-related actions taken by the Trump administration, reflecting a broader agenda to tighten immigration screening and enforcement. Other measures have focused on current visa holders, with considerations also being given to imposing new fees and restrictions on certain immigration and employment programs.
