As the ongoing women’s Test match against India at Lord’s unfolds, former England captain Heather Knight has revealed that this will be her final appearance in international cricket. This decision marks the conclusion of an illustrious 16-year career on the international stage.
Heather Knight first stepped into the international arena in 2010 and has since become England’s most-capped female player, amassing 320 appearances. Her leadership skills were recognized in 2016 when she took over the captaincy, guiding the team in 199 matches over nearly a decade. Notably, she led England to a triumphant victory in the Women’s World Cup held on their home turf in 2017.
At 35, Knight has etched her name in the history books as the first England player to achieve centuries across all three formats of international cricket, a milestone she reached with a T20I century in 2020. As she prepares to bow out from her international career, Knight’s record stands at an impressive 7,988 runs.
Reflecting on her retirement, Knight expressed her gratitude for the chance to represent England, noting that the dressing room has been a central part of her life for the past 16 years. She remarked that retiring during the historic women’s Test at Lord’s feels like the perfect moment to step away from the international game.
Clare Connor, who serves as England Women’s managing director, lauded Knight’s significant impact on the sport, emphasizing her stellar performances and leadership during a pivotal era for women’s cricket. Knight’s announcement follows closely on the heels of her teammate Tammy Beaumont, who also disclosed her impending retirement from international cricket after the Lord’s Test.
